“The next step,” Tam repeated. “It has to be finding where Ocean’s soul is now, doesn’t it? Can you do it again the same way you figured out that the soul was here with Finnbar?”

I turned to Conor and spread my hands, palms up.

“Sure,” he said. “The compact isn’t one use and then it’s done. It should work every time. Potentially forever.”

“We should carry it with us,” I said. “Now we have to go back home first.”

Finnbar, who’d been looking pretty glum, brightened. “Are you done with me, then? Because I would like you to leave and not return.” He blanched slightly. “Not that I’m ungrateful for fixing the shoes. I am, but I like my solitude.”

“We’re done,” I said. “We’ll leave you here in peace.”

In a flash, we stood in front of the tree in the park. A young boy on a bicycle careened to a halt only feet from us and stared. Conor crossed his index fingers in front of his chest and said, “Ride on. You didn’t see three people suddenly appear. You saw nothing out of the ordinary. You kept on riding on the pathway, all the way around the lake.”

“These aren’t the droids you’re looking for,” Tam mumbled.

I laughed softly. It was a little like that.

The boy nodded and pedaled off.

“Damn,” I said to Conor. “You know some really good tricks.”

“Useful enchantments,” he muttered, then made another gesture with his hands. The seal skin he carried on his shoulder vanished.

“Uh,” I said.

“I’ve got the skin. You just can’t see it.” He looked up at the sky and the sun hanging low in the west. “Come on. The day is getting away from us.”

Tam must have agreed, because she set off at a brisk pace toward where my car was parked.

Everyone was quiet as we drove over to Conor’s store. Reviewing the day, I presumed. Mostly I was thinking about Conor’s magic. I’d thought he was a metalsmith who could enchant objects and it ended there. I’ve known powerful wizards, mages, and the like. I don’t know why I was surprised at Conor’s powers, but I was. In some ways, he and I were two sides of the same coin—he put on spells; I took off spells, though I could cast, too. I guessed that he could remove as well as cast. I didn’t know what it all meant, but it was interesting.

I pulled into the parking lot and parked close to the store. We all trooped inside. I went with Conor to the back room to fetch the compact.

“I think Tam would like to see this work,” I said.

Conor looked out the open door that separated the store from the back room and called, “Would you like to join us?”

It tickled me to see Tam’s face light up like a kid at Christmas. Trace hadn’t had magic, and she’d hidden her own talent so long that all this rampant magic was new to her. She’d seemed surprised, even shocked, at some of the magic she saw earlier.
